Pedraza

By chris laker at 2010-10-25 00:23:26
This is a fairytale town - but so real When you come to this city for the first time, you get the impression that this is a museum exponent and not a place where people live. The town is fortified; there are about 500 inhabitants who live and work within the walls of Pedraza. This city has stayed unchanged for decades. In Pedraza, everything is the same as it was in the past; the walls still surround the city, the towers still stand proudly and above all, the city is intersected by cobbled streets.Pedraza is mostly made of stone and the atmosphere in the town is pretty much historical. This medieval town is a part of the province of Segovia, which belongs to the autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

People of this town are highly aware of its value

If you want to visit Pedraza, you have to make a one hour drive from the capital of Spain but you will not be allowed to enter the town with your car. Residents who live in Pedraza keep their town protected because they are aware of its value. In Pedraza, one is not allowed to do anything that would lead to the damage of the medieval monuments. However, this city is much older than its medieval remains. Judging by some paintings which were found in the surroundings of Pedraza, there was a Celtic settlement in the 4th century B.C. After Celts, the town was under the Romans. In the middle Ages, some noble families lived here and their homes still stand in Pedraza.Nowadays, Pedraza has fewer inhabitants than was the case in the 19th century. This happened because more and more people went to live in the cities. However, those who are still staying in Pedraza are truly trying to save their town. Thanks to their donations, the town was renovated in the late nineties.

A small town full of romance, holiday spirit and joy

Protector of the city is the Saint Virgen del Carrasco and each year there is a festival held in his honor. On the thirtieth of April and the first of May another festival is held in the town - the festival of San Jose Obrero in La Velilla. And in July, concerts are held every weekend. During these concerts, popularly called candlelight concerts, the whole Pedraza is lit by candles.A town worth visiting, Pedraza has much to offer!
